THIS TIME, WITH A FIRM hand at her elbow, Ducky led her into the Chipstead nick. It was cloudy outside, preventing the setting sunlight to pierce the gloom within the station room. As it was a Saturday, only one overhead fluorescent light had been switched on to light their way.

Judith was busy on her laptop at her pristine desk situated across from Ducky’s messy one. Talin was absent. He was helping his aunt move today. Had it only been one day since she was last here reporting Layla’s death? Felt like a lifetime had passed by.

They strode past DCI Radford’s office. His door was shut but Abbie spotted Callum through the glass partition. He spoke to a stranger. Behind him, his whiteboard appeared empty, which was odd. It was the only board in this station room and she had assumed that’s where they tracked information about their current case, Layla’s murder.

It should have been teeming with papers and pictures and lines drawn from one object to the next, linking clues. It was stark white and bare, suggesting Callum didn’t want his guest to see what must be on the flip side of that board. He didn’t trust his visitor.

Who was that heavy-set gentleman in a business suit with Callum? With his back to Abbie, she hadn’t been able to see the stranger’s face, but if Callum’s expression was any indication, they weren’t having a friendly chit-chat.

Judith gave Abbie a wary glance that flicked from Ducky to Abbie and then toward her boss’s closed door and back. She wore her stoic expression that said, Talk later.

Ducky brought a chair over for Abbie, but before she could sit, his hand on her shoulder pushed her downward.

“Hands off,” she snapped, resenting his heavy-handed treatment. “I’m not a suspect. I’m here voluntarily to give witness.”

“Twice in two days, about two different murders?” he said. “If that isn’t suspicious, I don’t know what is.”

He flashed her a nasty smirk, but like Judith, his wary glance swung back toward his boss’s office. Whoever was keeping Callum occupied put these two constables on edge, which now set Abbie’s nerves on alert.

Abbie was glad her parents had picked up the kids. The Grimshaws arrived so quickly after her call that Abbie suspected her mother had talked her husband into driving to the fair long before her daughter even rang for their assistance.

At Abbie’s request, Robert accompanied the children to reassure them that Abbie would be fine. She had no idea of Yousef’s whereabouts. He had yet to return from chasing after that dog. That mutt brought to mind all the stunning revelations during their conversation.

They must now deal with a dangerous immortal and a dog who’d been charmed to stay alive for as long as he had. Worse, the fiend had been right outside the Crystal Connections tent! She might have had to face him if the emergency crew hadn’t arrived so quickly. That acupuncturist might have saved her life by calling for help before the ten minutes he’d offered her ended.
